What Should I Do After a Hit-and-Run Accident?
There are important steps you should take after any bike or pedestrian accident or car wreck.
It is extremely important to obtain a police report within 24 to 48 hours of the accident in order to preserve and capture the facts. If possible, collect or photograph any evidence of the accident, such as paint chips and paint transfers, skid marks, damage to your vehicle, and any other evidence that another car was involved in the accident.
If there were witnesses, get their names and contact information and ask them to make statements about what they saw transpire, including a description of the other vehicle and what roles you and the other driver played in the accident.
Insurance Issues in Hit-and-Run Accident Claims
After a pedestrian accident, a bike accident or a car accident where the vehicle that hit you drives off, their insurance drives off with them. What you may not realize is that your own underinsured or uninsured motorist policy or homeowners insurance may cover your losses.
However, in these cases, your own insurance company is the adversary, which can make the claims process difficult. Our firm can work with your insurance company directly and negotiate the terms of a settlement. If your insurer denies or unduly delays your legitimate hit-and-run accident claim, we can also represent you in a bad faith insurance claim.
